Grace to you and peace from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ! (Rom. 1:7b)

At Capers Chapel United Methodist Church, we will welcome all that come into our church; provide a center of worship, spiritual growth, and fellowship that enables all to live lovingly; and reach out as faithful disciples of Christ to our community and the world. As United Methodist, we are in connection with all United Methodist churches worldwide, and we serve, faithfully, in the Greenwood District of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

I have been appointed as pastor of New Hope UMC by the Bishop Jonathon Holston and his cabinet. As pastor, I live out my calling from God to serve my community as a spiritual leader and friend to all people. I am thankful to be apart of the Pomaria community and look forward to seeing you around town.

When introducing myself, my father taught me to give a firm handshake. Since I cannot do that at this particular moment, I hope you know that I sincerely am thankful to get to introduce myself to you. I was given a journal one time by a very wise Sunday School teacher. In it, he hoped we would write about our journeys in life and our thoughts about Scripture. I never wrote in it all that much, but I kept it ever since I was 13. Occasionally, when I thought I should be one of those people who journal important things, I would pick it up and write something in it. In August of my 14 th year of life, I wrote, “And I believe that God has called me to be a preacher.” It was not until some years later that I would revisit this calling to pastoral ministry. At a youth function in my home church, our pastor asked for youth volunteers to participate in what we called “Youth Sunday.” The youth of the church would lead the worship service, and the preacher said that the church had not had a youth of the church preach the sermon in a long time. I had always enjoyed being in the spotlight, so I spoke up and volunteered to preach for this occasion. I will never forget my very first day of preaching. I will never forget saying the words, “and I believe that God has called me to be a preacher.” My life has never been the same since uttering those words.

I have had the privilege to serve in the United Methodist Church since 2015. My first appointment was to Trenton United Methodist Church, and I served there for 3 years. Now, as the pastor of New Hope UMC, I am so thankful that you have found yourself on our church’s website. In our church, we believe in the risen Jesus. A man, born some 2000 years ago, that came to this earth as fully God and fully human. He gave us insight into the essence of God and taught that God’s love for us goes so far that he would die so that we might have life and have it abundantly. We believe that Jesus’ reckless love is for all people, and today, we hope you know that you are loved. Jesus gave us the greatest commandment to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind…And a second like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:37-39). That is what you will find in our church. A people devoted to service to God and to neighbor. We hope to see you at our church for a time of fellowship and community in the name of Jesus Christ.
